The first thing you would want to do is get yourself a PRESTO card. You can find this in any Shoppers Drug Mart in the area you are staying.

Once you get board any mode of transport (Subway, Bus, LR) ticket for one ride you get a 2 hours validity on the ticket (3.25$). You can hop on and hop off any number of times on any of the TTC transit means and you will not be charged within this time.

If you want to make your way to places in the wider GTA (Greater Toronto Area), you will be getting on to a GO transport. These could be buses or trains depending on where you want to get to (Mississuaga, Pickering, Ajax, Hamilton, Oakville, etc to make a few). These tickets can cost a lot more than 3.25$, depending on the distance.
